Another great article in the Clay County Leader about HISD! Caren Rangel and Shannon Fletcher have worked together to make this an amazing support group for student success!
Community Collaboration Group
Businesses and Individuals help fill in the gaps
“Henrietta is such a giving community,” shared Shannon Fletcher, HISD counselor. She and staff member Karen Rangle formed a group of outreach for individuals and businesses in the area to organize support as needs arise.
The first meeting was in May, specifically to gather together those people wanting to help and collaborate efforts.
This summer several businesses and individuals provided free meals to summer school students during the four weeks of school in June.
Members have provided lunches for teachers, school supplies and backpacks for a ‘Back to School Bash’, just to name a few items.
The next meeting will be in September, emails and phone calls have been made to various businesses and individuals expressing an interest to be part of the committee.
Donations will be organized for November and December giving, specifically angel trees, clothing and food needed for students and families, and other items when needed.
A needs survey will be sent out to all HISD families to further support our community.
Local churches have been contacted to coordinate various need projects.
A back to school bash will be happening soon, August 8th.
If you are an individual, organization, or business, and would like to find out how you can make a difference in the lives of teachers, students and their families, reach out to Shannon Fletcher at www.shannon.fletcher@henrietta-isd.net. You can also find out information about attending the next community collaboration meeting.
Thank you for your continued generosity and support!
What a great article in the Clay County Leader about the school board coming together this summer to learn from other districts at the Summer Leadership Institute.
HISD Board Working to Improve Schools
Deborah Bachman
The board members of Henrietta School District attended the TASB (Texas Association of School Boards) Summer Leadership Institute
June 20 and 21. It was an opportunity for the team to learn and grow together about issues facing rural school districts and trends in public education.
HISD was represented with 100% attendance, all eight board members attended two days of speakers, workshops, and educational
break-out sessions. Board members attended the learning seminars at the Omni Hotel in Fort Worth, Texas.
Anthony Robles, a three-time wrestling ALL-American, the 2011 NCAA Division 1 National Champion and author of ‘Unstoppable’, gave an outstanding
motivational presentation as their key-note speaker. Robles was born without a right leg and didn’t let his disability hold him back from great pursuits and achievement.
He grew up with his mother continually telling him, “There’s nothing you can’t do!”
The conference consisted of three general sessions with motivational speakers and industry speakers to engage in conversation about public education. Attendees had the opportunity to choose from almost 100 different topics to participate in. They had to narrow it down to 8-10, proving to be difficult because of such a variety of current trends and important subjects.
School board members are required to invest their time in 5 hrs. per year of CE’s (continuing education), and the team attended ten hours of education during the two-day conference.
Penny Riordan, board member said, “We get so excited coming to this. I enjoyed learning from other schools how we can improve our schools for our students and teachers.”
She said the board will be meeting soon to discuss everything they learned, and to talk about what new ideas they can implement to make HISD better.
Some of the sessions included information on keeping up with legislative issues, improving student outcomes, underfunding due to county appraisal and comptroller disputes, a holistic approach to campus safety, and CTE programs, just to name a few.
Betty Ellsworth, board member shared, “As a former educator, I feel it is important for any and all whom have an interest in school district business to have the opportunity to learn from the ground level.”
She attended a session focusing on engaging your community and student leaders in the process of board policy and practices.
Betty also participated in several finance sessions focusing on lack of funding from the state and operating on tight budgets.
SLI offered new and experienced school trustees a place to create their own journey and to ask questions. The HISD team can now process what they learned, and put into practice new ideas to make our school district even greater.
The next HISD board meeting open to the public will be Monday, August 19th, at 6 p.m., in the administration office. The location is 1802 E. Crafton Street, Henrietta.
Let's give a big Bearcat welcome to Zachary Fulton! Zachary will join the HJH family as an ELA teacher for the upcoming school year. We are looking forward to a year of learning and growth! #goldstandard
